Sleep

How Well Do You Sleep?

Sleep is one of the most mysterious human activities. Science hasn't been able to tell us why we need to sleep, scientists can only tell us what happens if we don't sleep and we all know that if we do not get sufficient rest and sleep, our bodies become more susceptible to infection and we do not function as well as when well rested. The most accepted reason is that sleep serves our psychological and physical restorative functions.

Some people may find that ten hours of sleep is not enough, others will feel well rested and ready for a big day just after only a couple of hours. One of the most common way to describe the onset of sleep is the sensation of falling off a cliff.

There are basically two phases of sleep: REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM(non rapid eye movement). Adults start their sleep in NREM, followed by REM, and then they alternate all through the night. Dreams happens in the REM phase of sleep. Young children start their sleep in REM, this is could be one reason why scientists believe that dreams are important for neurological and psychological development.

Another interesting aspect of sleep is that all sleepers dream, some remember their dreams, others don't.

Common sleep problems include insomnia, sexomnia, sleep apnea, bad dreams, and sleep walking.
