Diet & Nutrition > The Foods We Eat
Foods have sustained not only mankind, but all life on Earth since life began. Our foods are classified by the nutrients that they provide; i.e. meats, fish, pulses, seeds and nuts provide proteins, grains (starches) provide energy while fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These foods when eaten in various combinations have different effects.
Food combining is a science in itself, we find that a diet heavy in meat and starch with few vegetables and fruits is more likely to lead to degenerative diseases, whereas diets light in heavy proteins but with abundant fresh fruits and vegetables may lead to a longer healthier life.
While a healthy balanced diet and diet and nutrition are key aspects are important in order to have a healthy life, nutrition alone is not always enough. We must also develop an overall healthy lifestyle.
Superfoods
Super foods are a new classification and while superfoods are really any foods that have been found to be especially nutritious or otherwise beneficial to health and well-being so as to support recovery from illness, provide additional strength and stamina above more commonly consumed foods.
For example most fresh berry fruits are often considered as superfoods (or superfruits) because they contain significant amounts of antioxidants, anthocyanins, vitamin C, manganese and dietary
fibre that are easily digestible
The term is not in common currency amongst dietitians and nutritional scientists, many of whom dispute the claims made that consuming particular foodstuffs can have a health benefit[2] There is no legal definition of the term and it has been alleged that this has led to it being over-used as a marketing tool.
Here we are also looking at foods filled with bio available nutrition that when eaten with a balanced diet and plenty of exercise support our bodies and help to improve our health.
